Now here's a little trip you may like to undertake during those wetter and colder months - The 'Trans-
Pennine Rail Ale Trail’. This day out with a difference is a pub crawl by rail from Dewsbury to
Manchester along the Trans Pennine route, hence the name. The Trans-Pennine route combines the ease
of rail travel, splendid scenery, superb real ale and good food. Head for Dewsbury via Manchester and
return calling at Huddersfield, Marsden and Stalybridge.

THE PUBS

Dewsbury
:
West Riding. Tel: 01924 459193.  Situated on Platform 2 of this Grade II listed station building.
Open from 11:00 -23:00. Listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2007 and also the Campaign
for Real Food guide. Black Sheep and Taylors as regulars.

Huddersfield:
Head of Steam. Tel: 01484 454533. Situated on the platform and is part of the Grade I listed
station building. The walls of the pub are adorned with railway memorabilia and is a mini museum.
Open from 09:00 - 00:30 (Mon - Thu) and 09:00 - 02:00 (Fri). Real ale's available as well as
food good prices.
Train Station Tavern: Tel: 01484 511058. Situated at the opposite end of the platform to the
Head of Steam. Up to eight real ale’s on tap. A GBG entry for 2007.

Marsden:
Tunnel End Inn, Reddisher Road Tel: 01484 844636. Near the Standedge Visitor centre.
Opening times of the pub vary a lot so please check before heading out here. Listed in the 2007
GBG.
Railway Inn, by Marsden Station: Tel: 01484 841541. Real ale’s were on tap during my last
visit in 2005.

Stalybridge:
Station Buffet: Tel: 0161 303 0007. Step back in time....the famous Buffet Bar is one of the last
independently run station refreshment rooms. Dating from May 1885 the bar, fittings, fireplace and
conservatory remain as they were built. It was extended using the old living accommodation and
1st class ladies waiting room. Also listed in the Good Beer Guide 2007 and has at least four real
ale's on tap at all times. Once inside you'll understand how easy it can be to miss your train!!!.
